Color Correcting GoPro Flat Profile

Here is a step-by-step color correction workflow that works in any editor with color tools (DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, LumaFusion):

  4. Add saturation -- increase saturation by 15-30% from the Flat baseline. Do not overdo it. GoPro footage pushed too far on saturation looks unnatural, especially on skin tones and foliage.
  5. Apply a creative look (optional) -- once the image is corrected to a natural baseline, apply a LUT or grade for the mood you want. Warm, slightly desaturated tones work well for travel. High-contrast, cool shadows work for action. DaVinci Resolve includes dozens of free LUTs.
Pro Tip

Apply your color correction to one clip, then copy and paste the grade to all clips shot in the same conditions. In DaVinci Resolve, right-click a graded clip and select "Copy" then select the target clips and "Paste Grade." This saves enormous time on longer projects.

If you shot with GoPro Color instead of Flat, you still benefit from minor adjustments: a slight contrast boost, gentle saturation increase, and shadow recovery. The image will already be close to final but can always be refined.

High frame rate footage (60fps, 120fps, 240fps) is meant for slow motion. In your editor, slow these clips down to your timeline frame rate: 60fps footage at 40% speed on a 24fps timeline, 120fps at 20%, 240fps at 10%. This produces smooth slow motion without frame blending artifacts. Do not drop high-fps footage on a 24fps timeline at normal speed -- it wastes the frame rate advantage and the file sizes are larger than necessary for normal-speed playback.
